Slothfulness, Be Gone!

Who me? No, couldn't be. Then who?
Maybe you?

I can safely say that it had been ages since I had heard the word 'slothful' spoken out loud by anyone. So you can imagine my amusement when I heard Pastor Joe Olaiya use it over and over during our 'Recovery' prayers on the morning of the 3rd and last day our Sorting Out. By the way, have you registered for the next programme coming up from 20 to 22 February 2014? I hope so. Like I said in my blog about it, you will not regret it. Anyway, I might have been chuckling on the inside but it did not stop me from understanding with much soberness that many times we blame the devil for stuff that our own laziness has caused. Many of us are unwilling to do what God wants simply because of the effort it will take to do it. In short, many of us are sloths. Ouch!

Yes, painful but true. Let's just admit it and take steps to deal with it today. Tell me, how many times has your alarm gone off and you knew it meant you should get up and pray or go jogging/walking and yet you snoozed it and went back to bed? Or how about the little extra 5, 5 minutes we take in the morning when we should wake up and get out of the house early so you can beat the morning traffic? I raise my hand: Guilty as charged! Then I will slink into the office moaning about Lagos traffic.....I can fool anyone I like but I know, you know that this is just slothfulness. We are slow to do what we have to do. We are physically and/or spiritually lazy. And the truth of the matter is that we are messing with sin. Yep, slothfulness is one of the 7 deadly sins. Why we choose to mess with it, I don't know.

Please let's not sell ourselves cheap in 2014. We must be very careful not to allow this laziness; spiritual and physical rob us off our blessings.  No, that will not happen to anyone reading this blog in Jesus name. Amen! But as much as I love you, I cannot do this for you. I cannot force you to attend to the first things FIRST! You have to make that choice yourself. Together, we have to decide to be prompt when it comes to attending to our spiritual and physical lives. How shall we do it? Like this:

1. We shall arise early because the sloth loves to sleep. Sleep is good but not the way the sloth does it and the Bible does not mince words. Look:
  • “Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger” (Proverbs 19:15).
  • “Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread” (Proverbs 20:13)
So do you want to be hungry or poor in 2014? Then resist slothfulness!
2. We shall value the time God is giving us. It is our most valuable resource. Let's not waste one second of it. Once we spend it, it is gone forever. The end of our days is an approaching certainty. So please let's use our time wisely. “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15–17). Sit down and plot a pie-chart of your day. How much time do you spend doing things that would add real value to your life? How much do you spend doing 'legacy-building' things? How much time do you spend sleeping or vegetating, remote in hand in front of the telly? Or on the Internet? Or on your BB? Or at work instead of at home?

My final word:
“The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. . . . So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (Psalm 90:10–12).

May God teach us all to number our days on this earth and apply our hearts to His wisdom. When they call our names, may the words 'laziness or slothfulness' never feature in Jesus Christ name. Amen! All that God has in store for us in 2014 and beyond, this trait will not prevent us from entering in Jesus Christ name. Amen!

I sincerely think that if we can get slothfulness, un-forgiveness and truly live a 'saved' life of obedience to and fellowship with God, 2014 will truly be a phenomenal year. Mark my words, a phenomenal year to the glory of our God! I can feel it! *so excited*
