'God Bless You' Is Not Just Another Greeting.

Do you even think about it when you say 'God Bless you' to someone? We say it all the time. We say it as a sign off to phone calls and sms messages. Some of us even use it as the opening greeting to any conversation. We say it when someone sneezes and sometimes we say it in place of 'Have a good day' or  'Thank you'. But I have been reminded today that the words 'God Bless You' is one of the most powerful prayers of all time and we really need to be paying more attention when we use them.

We actually do use these words when we are praying too. We say God bless X, God Bless Y, God bless City of David, God bless Mercy Place, God bless Nigeria, God bless my family, God bless the work of my hands and on and on we go. And while there is nothing wrong with this I have to ask again, do we really understand exactly what we are asking God to do? I think we use it so often that 'see-finish' has set it and is preventing us from truly tapping into what God has for us. Let's fix this today.

First let's clear up our understanding of these words. Bruce Wilkinson, the author of the Prayer of Jabez book explains that 'to bless' in the biblical sense means to impart or ask for God to impart supernatural favour. We are in effect, asking God to give us or someone all the wonderful unlimited goodness that only He has the power to know about or give to us or them. And People of God, when God does that, when God blesses us,  'all our works adds nothing to it' (see Proverbs 10.22).

So this means that rather than asking for a car or a house or a visa or a husband or a job or the next level, sometimes we probably need to simply ask for God's blessing. This way we will be asking Him for nothing less or nothing more than He wants for us. I was so happy to be re-reading this little book again cos Bruce's words below as he tried to explain all of this capture perfectly what I am about in this season of my life:

When we seek God's blessing as the ultimate value in life, we are throwing ourselves entirely into the river of His will and power and purposes for us. All our other needs become secondary to what we really want - to become wholly immersed in what God is trying to do in us, through us and around us for HIS glory!

So you see how come 'God Bless You' is not just some Christianese greeting?  Next time you say it to someone, know that you are asking for only God's desires to come to pass in that person's life. You need to pray for that person to want that too cos you and I know that THAT takes another level of trust.

  1. Hmmm...how often we say this without even giving thoughts to our words. Speaking God's blessing into anyone's life is really like giving the person an open (divine) cheque.

    Thanks for sharing.

  2. @Abiola: Exactly but an open cheque with the 'strings' of trust, obedience and total submission to God's will for one's life 'attached'
